Happy New Year - 2008

Happy new year guys, may 2008 be a year in which your dreams and aspirations come true or at least a year in which you find the way to make them happen.

Felix the cat

we are now the owners of a cat.we have officially been house broken and trained. she is very proud of us.

Felix, our female cat, is very sweet. we rescued her off the street, but actually, she adopted us. about a month and a half a go she started showing up at our door step and begging for attention. finally, when the weather turned really rainy i let her in. and it’s been fun ever since. i never thought that someone can have so much fun with a string. or yarn.

A little bit of nostalgia (and a poll)

When i was a kid we had a bit of a limited choice in the TV department. we had only one channel, and the programs we saw were a strange array of old British shows and newer American ones.my favorites were: “Fame”, “Degrassi”,”1,2,3 contact” and a British show called “the sandbaggers”. “fame” made me want to be a singing ballerina, “Degrassi” taught me not to get pregnant as a teen (apparently it gives you a really bad hair do…) but also showed me that ugly people can be on TV too.

But my all time favorite was “the sandbaggers”- it examined the effect of the espionage game on the personal and professional lives of British and American intelligence specialists. after seeing that show, there was no stopping me: i started watching “Remington steel”, read every Tom Clancy i could get my hands on and watched every spy movie i could see. for a really long time i was sure i have found my calling.age 12, but still….

Of course a couple of years later i found another obsession- i gave that “fame” thing another shot and sang my little heart out for a few years. I was actually quite good at it, but dropped it once i realized that just being “good” isn’t good enough.

Today, i still sing in the shower, and i read mysteries and see spy movies, and i remember “the sandbaggres” as one of the best TV shows I’ve ever seen.

After i realized that my boyfriend, who is only a year older then me, never even heard of the show, i looked it up and to my surprise found out that the show i remember as being so amazing, had only 20 episodes. It seems unconceivable to me that the show that had such impact on me was so short lived.it made me wonder: what other TV shows had an impact on people, and how many of them were “hits”?

so here’s a little poll for you:

What was your favorite TV show as a child/teen and was it a “hit” show? let me know your thoughs.

And here’s a little taste from the “sandbaggers”:

Night view-city life

Here’s a video i found made by a guy called Eli Toyster. I really like the Urban feel and the jazzy music.

Back to school thougts

Yesterday was my first day back at University.i’m doing my MA in information science.one way to look at it is that i’m training to be a glorified librarian, another is that I’ll be paid to google things….

after finishing my LLB and realizing that there’s a snowball’s chance in hell that I’ll ever become a lawyer (feeling like i need to take a hot shower after speaking to my colleagues EVERYDAY was running my water bills way up), i took some time of to dabble in different things and then decided that i want to go back to Uni and do my MA. i thought that since i spend all my time on the web anyway, and love finding things, it’s probably a good idea to make a career out of it. so now i’m back in school, and educating myself. i figure that even if I’ll end up a glorified librarian, at least I’ll rock that glasses and pencil skirt look.the boyfriend would be pleased i’m sure.

so here i am, a student once more. i would love to hear from you all about your thoughts on information science and business intelligence.

computer poetry

Haiku and computer, who would have thought they’d go so well together. in this page (http://cad.ece.ut.ac.ir/~sohail/Fun/Funny%20Haikus.htm) you will find common computer problems written in a Haiku structure.these are my favorites:

Chaos reigns within.

Reflect, repent, and reboot.

Order shall return.

————————————

Windows NT crashed.

I am the Blue Screen of Death.

No one hears your screams.

Yes!there’s life on Mars!

So it’s not exactly a scientific discovery, and it’s not really news worthy, but today i got my first comment!.and i checked the blog stats and people actually read what i wrote.i’m ridiculously thrilled.

Thank god it’s the weekend

Hmmm…waking up late,to a cup of coffee and the weekend newspaper, slowly starting my day by giving my apartment the once-over making sure its decent enough for the party we’ll have tonight.going to the supermarket and then coming back home, to curl up with a cuppa, my fleece tv blanket and a good book. it’s heaven.

last week i read two wonderful books that will make a good curling up material for you guys:

Old man’s war by John sclazi: It’s the most romantic sci-fi book I’ve read…ever.its human and it’s touching and thrilling and even if you are not of the sci-fi crowd you’ll be able to relate since it speaks of the human fears of getting old and losing the people we love as well as ourselves as we are used to.

without giving much away: The first-person narrative is about a soldier named John Perry and his exploits in the CDF (Colonial Defense Forces).the thing is, John Perry is 75.

The orientalist by Tom Reiss: Muslim prince Kurban Said wrote a bestselling novel (Ali and Nino) that made him a celebrity in Nazi Germany and allowed him to marry an international heiress. The only problem? Said’s real name was Lev Nussimbaum, and he was born a Russian Jew. Tom Reiss’ thoroughly-researched biography explores Nussimbaum’s colorful life, mixing in a cultural and political history of the early 20th century in the process.

So that’s it for the weekend i think.going to have a little R&R as well as seeing friends and family (okay, so not so much R&R). Have fun!
